From Counter Chaos to Custom: Create a Cutting Board Rack
One of my favorite things about DIY is seeing how a simple idea can transform a space—and how approachable it becomes once you have a clear plan in place. Recently, I worked with my friend (and client!) Julia to design and build a custom cutting board rack for her kitchen. She wanted something practical, stylish, and perfectly tailored to her wall space.
Step 1: Custom Plan & Mood Boards
We started with a consultation where I took down all the measurements of her kitchen wall and storage needs. From there, I created mood boards with different styles so Julia could choose the look and finish that worked best for her home. Once we landed on the design, I put together a step-by-step guide that included diagrams, instructions, and even a pre-filled Home Depot shopping cart so she could easily order all the materials.
Step 2: Tools & Training
Because Julia is a friend, I brought over some of my own tools to get her started:
Miter saw
Sander
Corner clamp
Brad Nailer
Drill
Pocket hole Kreg jig
Not only did this make the project easier, but it also gave Julia a crash course in how to use these tools confidently. (There’s something empowering about picking up a brad nailer for the first time!)
Step 3: Building the Rack
The frame came together first. Then Julia added shelves and a front bar to ensure that cutting boards and kitchen items wouldn’t slip off. After a quick test fit on the wall, she temporarily secured the rack to double-check measurements.
Step 4: Finishing Touches
After taking the rack back down, Julia filled the nail holes, sanded everything smooth, and applied her chosen stain. The result? A functional, beautiful cutting board rack that perfectly matches her space. She’ll be hanging it in its final spot soon—so stay tuned for Part 2 to see the finished look installed!
